Why Should I Confirm My Pregnancy Before an Abortion?

Here at Mya, we recommend preliminary testing done on site to determine that an abortion is necessary. Within the first trimester, up to thirty-percent of all pregnancies can end in a natural miscarriage. Unfortunately, not all clinics are willing to perform the additional testing to confirm pregnancy viability and, therefore, need for abortion. This potentially subjects women to unnecessary financial cost, stress, and possible medical complications. Staff at Mya are committed to avoiding unwarranted procedures and to ensuring our patients receive the most accurate information about their situation and the options available to them.

All appointments at Mya begin with a clinical grade urine pregnancy test. This step identifies the presence of the hCG hormone in the urine. Some level of this hormone is present in the urine throughout the entire pregnancy. However, a urine test alone is not diagnostic of a viable pregnancy. HCG levels fluctuate naturally and in the instance of spontaneous miscarriage. A urine test simply tells us that the hormone is present, not whether the levels are trending up or down. For more detailed information, we need additional testing.

One of the diagnostic studies used to obtain information about a pregnancy is ultrasound. Ultrasound is the only way to confirm location and viability of pregnancy and can be performed starting at five weeks and one day from the last menstrual period. This study can determine if a urine test produced a false positive, and it will aid in identifying pregnancies that are not viable (pregnancies occurring outside of the uterus and those where no heartbeat can be detected). It is also instrumental in dating a pregnancy which enables the Patient Advocate at Mya to compile a tailored and detailed list of the options available to you. Ultrasound studies are offered free of charge to all patients seen at Mya with a positive urine pregnancy test.

At Mya Women’s Center, we follow a patient-centered approach. Our goal is to provide complete, confidential, and unbiased care to help you make a well-informed decision. We offer the most accurate diagnostic testing and referral to the areas best local resources to help in that decision-making process. Contact us today.

A mother’s first concern becomes the health of her pregnancy or newborn. While we wish to provide answers to all of your questions, it’s unfortunately too soon to say anything definitively. The CDC simply hasn’t had enough time to collect the needed data to make conclusions.

Many people share these misconceptions, which is why we wanted to look at some of the more common myths about unintended pregnancy and sex.

For many, the holidays are a time of joy and family gatherings, reuniting with friends and loved ones they haven’t seen in years, and enjoying the time with each other. However, when you’re facing an unplanned pregnancy, those gatherings can turn from a source of happiness to a source of anxiety. While they may mean well, the conversations and questions that can arise can be uncomfortable and hard to navigate.

If you are considering an abortion, it is important to equip yourself with as much knowledge as you can about the procedure, the risks, and the effects on your physical, mental, and emotional health. Nowadays there are extravagant, outlandish ways to share just about any news. Social media feeds are clogged with creative gender reveals, promposals, first days of school, and so much more. But what if the thought of telling your partner you’re pregnant is making you feel less like you’ve got butterflies dancing in your belly waiting to explode outward into a creative insta post, and more like you’ve been punched in the gut?

As a medical professional, I am often reminded how fortunate I am to work with people and not with the major insurance companies that, today, dictate how people are cared for. The world of health insurance is convoluted and difficult to understand. Because we know that a woman’s mind is often spinning when contemplating an abortion, we sought to answer some common complicated questions about abortion cost and insurance coverage, so you can focus on the important stuff.

So you’ve gotten a positive result on a home urine pregnancy test, now what? Up to one-third of all pregnancies can end in a natural miscarriage. With rates of naturally terminating pregnancies this high, the next step after a positive test is to determine viability via ultrasound. From there, Mya Women’s Center will help you wield your right to choose what comes next.
